The games at the Halloween party were
unlike any Shawna had ever played: mind-reading games, tarot-card games,
horoscope readings. She eluded being roped in on most of them by excusing
herself to get punch or go to the bathroom. But worse than the games was the
eerie feeling in the air. There seemed to be nowhere to go to escape it.
"Hey, what's wrong with you,
Shawna?" Terilyn asked, her painted white face and heavy black eyeliner
adding to the creepy feeling of the party. "Isn't this what we've been
looking forward to for weeks? You haven't even had Ms. Carmona read your
horoscope yet. Get with it, girl! You're missing out on all the fun."
Shawna glanced toward the front of
the room where Ms. Carmona was offering to read horoscopes. Maybe ... later," Shawna said. "There's
a line right now. You go ahead.” Terilyn laughed. "Of course there's a
line. How often do we get a chance to have our horoscope read by a real live
witch?”
Maybe this would be a good time to
leave, Shawna
thought, glancing around the room. If I just had some way to get
home....
